“Why do people live in New York? There is no relationship between them. Except for an inner electricity which results from the simple fact of their being crowded together. A magical sensation of contiguity and attraction for an articifial centrality. This is what makes it a self-attracting universe, which there is no reason to leave. There is no human reason to be here, except for the sheer ecstacy of being crowded together.”

Hog And Hominy

“Frederick Opie’s culinary history is an insightful portrait of the social and religious relationship between people of African descent and their cuisine. Beginning with the Atlantic slave trade and concluding with the Black Power movement of the 1960s and 1970s, Opie composes a global history of African American foodways and the concept of soul itself, revealing soul food to be an amalgamation of West and Central African social and cultural influences as well as the adaptations blacks made to the conditions of slavery and freedom in the Americas.”

On a side note, I’m not sure what to think of the author’s name… Frederick Douglass. Is this some massive joke by white America or what????

I kid, I kid.

According to a study done at John Hopkins School of Public Health entitled Will All Americans Become Overweight or Obese? Estimating the Progression and Cost of the US Obesity Epidemic, “86 percent of Americans are going to be overweight or obese by 2030.” Furthermore, Black women and Hispanic men, the two groups at the bottom of the income scale (who subsequently have the least health insurance coverage), are also the two most at-risk groups. O rly??

This is why I cringe at the popularity of shows like 30 Minute Meals and recipes that are “quick and easy”/ call for prepackaged everything. What kind of “recipe” calls for jarred this and canned that? Any stoned college student with a microwave and an imagination could write 99% of the recipes Real Simple and other such magazines. I really wish people CARED about their food these days! No more of this “I don’t have time” bullshit. It’s that exact attitude that’s killing us. Make the fucking time and you will add years to your life, guaranteed.
