For Nora #1

October 13, 2008

The other weekend I met up with my friend Nora, who gave me a really cool mix that she had burned for me. Unable to reciprocate because of my shitty computer’s lack of CD burner, I thought it would be cool to give her a mixtape of my own…via blog! So, I’m starting a mini-series of posts called For Nora, each of which will feature a song on the “tape”, for both her and your downloading pleasure, dear reader.

I’m starting things off with a bit of blue-eyed soul via Londontown: Jamie Lidell’s Multiply.

you know how in the olden days they used to have women who would read your future from the pattern of tea leaves left in your cup? well i need someone who can do that…but with podcasts.  the mystic of the 21st century. this is what i have right now:

The Fader Magazine

HerbMentor (I’ve been getting into herbalism)

KCRW’s Good Food

Diplo’s Mad Decent Radio

the Stones Throw recording label

keep in mind, this is only on the “guest” account.  the other account i use on this computer has things like the Dr Weil podcast, the Cooks Illustrated podcast, and the Whole Foods podcast.  i’m sure i’m missing some.

Cesaria Evora-Lua Nha Testemunha

I think this woman is one of the top 5 singers in the world. No lie. Such an incomprehensible, beautiful voice. Though I have never been to her homeland of Cape Verde, I HAVE been to Brazil, and the two are pretty similar. Thus, I can say with relative certainty that she is unparalleled in that she truly captures the place in her voice and her music; the society, the land, the people of Cabo Verde. This song reminds me of running your hand along a crystal chandelier; the clarity of the glass, the delicate yet powerful, twinkling sound. If you want to REALLY hear this, you shouldn’t watch the youtube video. Just hit play and let it do it’s thing while you read, or browse the internet, or write an email or take a hot bath, or eat cocopuffs, or whatever. Better yet, just buy one of her CDs and play it on your best system. It’s at its most magnificent when the sound is crisp and clear.
